la lapine c'est la plus belle de l'équipe bravo monsieur tezuka pour ce petit personnage tout mignon
Haha! Yeah, she's quite adorable.
This was a fascinating video. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on bandés dessinée, fumetti, and other countries' comics as well!
Would certainly like to check them out at some point. Have heard some good things about bandés dessinée.
It's hilarious to me that MW is listed as "Moo" in the video chapters. Though, aside from that, I liked this video, and these are some good recommendations!
Haha! That's hilarious! Still, it was hardly going to get MW from my voice. Glad to hear!
@@Immortallium Yeah, that makes sense. I keep forgetting that MW is meant to be pronounced as "Moo."
@@artCharles Yeah, if I hadn't heard other people say it (or be able to read katakana), I would never have said it that way!
I'm 3 chapters in so far, and I can honestly say I'm just as disappointed with it. I enjoyed the original manga quite a lot, as a fan of the various animes, and 1.5 was a great bonus too. While I was fully expecting a story focused entirely on Motoko, I wasn't expecting it to be this jarring, poorly-presented, overly-verbose and yet poorly-explained in the areas that truly matter. It's already confusing that Motoko changed her last name to Aramaki, as I was under the assumption this long brown-haired character was Daisuke's niece or daughter or whatever. Then there's the technobable and walls upon walls of banter between Motoko and her AI companions, giving them orders and tasks to fulfil, and the story moves at a snail's pace. Ghost in the Shell as a franchise has always been dialogue-heavy, but it managed to stay engaging and continue pushing the plot along. It was easy to follow, especially the older I got , the more life experience I had and the more I understood the terminology used. I'm pushing 30 now, and I'm STILL having a hard time getting through Ghost in the Shell 2, because it's just so dull. And then when we finally get to some action, there's so much visual noise and it's hard to make heads or tails of what's happening to who during the fights. I'm gonna stick with it, considering how much money I paid for it, but my god is this one a misstep. I can understand why the various anime adaptations steered clear from the plotlines in this one, save for the human-pig organ facility. The ending of the original manga was open, yet conclusive. The possibilities were endless for Motoko, and it was anyone's guess as to where she'd go from there. The audience could come to their own conclusion, and maybe they should have, if THIS was the follow-up. It's not like Man Machine Interface couldn't work, but the execution is lacklustre.
Oh wow! Gotta admit to being surprised when I clicked read more and saw the wall of text! It's not a problem BTW, just surprised me. Yeah, it definitely was. I knew that some people felt mixed about it but I was still excited to read it since it seemed like it was doing something different and...yes, it was doing something different. While I usually appreciate that in media, this manga is a good example that different isn't always better. I'm glad I've read it so I can now talk to people about it but, yeah, I think I share similar feelings to you.
Totally agree on all points. "Ghost in the Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface," sucks!
Yeah, it's not great. Could've been though and that's what makes it sad.
Phoenix is a must-have. I hope you can find a used book to collect it. The Dawn and Future and Karma editions will have deep resonance. I don't know if there is an English version available, but I also recommend “The Sunny Tree” and “Paper Fortress,” a short autobiography of Tezuka's boyhood.
I really hope so as well. Hoping they rerelease them someday as that would probably be the easiest way to get them. I think I remember reading about those in The Art of Osamu Tezuka. Again, would love to read those someday.
I would say 15 volumes is short for on going manga while also being more approachable if it is completed
I think that's a fair assessment.
This was very helpful, thank you!
Always glad to!
I actually really liked the story. Perhaps it's because I came from Appleseed ex machina. The really poor quality of the animation kind of hit me but I guess it is 2004. I watched the 4K AI upscale version on UA-cam.
I personally thought that the story of Ex Machina was better but to each their own. In terms of CGI animation at the time, America released both Shrek and The Incredibles that year which I think the 2004 Appleseed film was miles behind. Ironically though, it was better than some of the CGI films Japan produced before that though. Those ones are...yikes.
@@Immortallium yeah no doubt I'm used to the early 2000s American CGI animated movies things like Hot Wheels highway 35, And acceleracers which was still "bad" but at least it had A fairly decent resolution. So a 4K upscale wouldn't really be necessary.
@@MrCOLBSTAH I've never seen those so I can't say to their quality. Still, that was the wild west when it came to CGI animation and there was so much produced that looked absolutely repulsive. Appleseed (2004) isn't anywhere near that level of bad but it still isn't a particularly pleasant visual experience (in my personal opinion at least).
What happened bro
If you're talking about me uploading videos then it may still be a while I'm afraid. Someone asked me about this recently and I said "Problem is that I've been unbelievably busy lately with some days resulting in 11-12 hours of work. Not only does that mean my time to make a video for this channel is limited but I'm also exhausted and would probably do a terrible job. I will get back to it someday but I don't know when that'll be." Apologies but there's some things I'm trying to get done before I can return.
Thanks for the outstanding top 10 list! Lots of new Manga for me to seek out.
Glad to be able to help!
Greetings from Northern Ireland. Your discovery of tokusatsu is eerily similar to my own. I agree that it is harder than it should be to watch series over here. I am of the mindset that if it's not being made available in my region, then piracy is fair game. I would love to get my hands on some kamen rider blu rays. The previous sentai season (king ohger) was pretty dope, so I would love a physical of that too.
Great review I was totally lost plot wise , and there was an unusual amount of crotch shots. Come to find out the author only makes porn now lol
Many good pieces that i didn't even ever heard about and even most of them are my genre. I am glad for your recommendations.
Glad you enjoyed the video and that I could help!
Short number 3 gave me a feeling of existential dread. If I was in a better place mentally right now, I may have been able to finish it, and maybe the story wouldn't have been life changing, but the voice over and animation was straight out of a bad acid trip, while I would consider the first film to be a good shroom trip. I liked number 1 the most for the animation, and I liked number 2 a lot because I just like that kind of story, and the characters were ultra silly which is always good to me. The scene where the generals thumb opens up and reveals a cigar was my favorite kind of cheesy. Then you find out he's a fucking robot so the cigar literally is only there for the aesthetic. Then when he gets his new body in the most wholesome of ways, it makes me feel happy. I feel like 2 should have been number 3. It was so shocking the change of tone. In anthology films if each film has the same general aesthetic, it's ok to go from happy to darker. But in cases where the aesthetics vary so wildly, maybe get the darker stuff out of the way. This is just me thought dumping.
Wow! First off, thanks for the thought dumping! Yeah, I can certainly see that. I enjoyed it myself but I can see how some might see the aesthetic as an assault on the senses! A few of the other shorts are definitely worth returning to so you can check my video and see if the premise or style of the others catches your attention. If not, that's fair. Thanks for commenting!
@@Immortallium No problem man, I'm honestly surprised Genius party didn't get more buzz even if just for the spectacle. There's another odd one that's about 9 minutes long and is extremely Avant Guard called Hana No Ni: Day of Nose. It's basically this oddly animated film with no talking, and all sound design. If you like odd styles of storytelling and animation, that will be a trip.
@@Poshriel Oh yeah, the one by Atsushi Wada. He makes weird but very interesting films. Would love to see them one day. Yeah, I really love the idea of anthology films where directors and animators can just go wild. There's a few examples but not as many as I'd like.
do you know of any 4-koma manga that are not comedy?
That's a very good question! I wasn't able to think of any so I tried looking it up. There may be a few but, if there are, I don't know any specifically. The format is structured for comedy and it's quite likely that mangaka would go for the standard format if they aren't making a comedic series. Still, if you find any, please let me know as I'd be extremely intrigued!
Talking in 2024, it looks to me DMP Platinum has put out a lot of important manga that for some reason or another, the majors like Viz, Seven Seas, Yen Press, Vertical, or even Dark Horse won't or can't touch. When their books come out, they have like one smallish printing and they go out of print. Then all of those books go up in value by a lot. I had to pay like a grand for the 1-6 compendium of Kimagure Orange Road. DMP originally put out a lot of titles but the biggest one is Berserk.
Wow, this is a blast from the past (Can't even remember when this video went up!) Yeah, DMP Platinum was good in that sense although a bit limited since it was pretty much just Osamu Tezuka titles, Speed Racer and Kimagure Orange Road. Yeah, the fact that they go out of print so fast is frustrating and one of my biggest problems with them (I must've mentioned it in the video but I honestly can't remember if I did.) Yeah, the company worked with Dark Horse for a while on both Berserk and Vampire Hunter D (not sure if there were other titles they did) but doesn't seem like they've put out anything recently. Just checked their website and Wonder 3 is one of their most recent manga (it's been a few years since then).
@@ImmortalliumThe ole "it's new for the content viewer but it's old for the content creator" :D
I keep coming back here when I need another volume 😅 it’s truly a beautiful series but it’s so rare volume 5 is extremely expensive 😭 hopefully one day I’ll collect them all
I hope so too! It's such a great manga and it's tragic that it still isn't in print.
Great recs, thank you!
Anything for my favourite sponge!
It's been a few years, but I've read Tezuka's Apollo's Song, Ode to Kirihito, and his Buddha series. Those manga earned Tezuka my respect. I'm hoping to get hooked on his work again. Thanks for sharing your recommendations! Just picked up an omnibus copy of Dororo, put it next to my copy of Ayako (a friend gave me his copy). I'm hesitant about reading Ayako, since its premise sounds downright depressing.
Glad you liked the video! Yeah, there're some tough moments in Ayako but I adore it. Definitely not for everyone's taste but, if you've read Ode to Kirihito, I think you should be able to handle it.
@@Immortallium thanks, I'll be sure to give Ayako a look.
Fantastic story by legend osamu tezuka but.. I had a question about the the ending, can someone explain the ending to me? is it a time paradox or something with what happens to bokko turning into kanako, nokko into mr. baba and pukko into prof. sogi? because it weird me out that, if its the same person, then the ending doesn't make any sense right? Which means from the very beginning, Bokko just being jealous with her other-self(Kanako=Bokko), but what really weird me out is that the timeline W3's punishment get sent to earth without memory, Bokko getting adopt by Kanako's parents and this is the part that should be obvious, there should be two Kanano(Bokko)!! Either it was a oversight from osamu tezuka or I'm just not getting it? Anybody?
It's been a while since I've read this so I hope I'm remembering correctly (someone can correct me if I'm wrong) but I believe what happened was that, by moving faster than the speed of light, they went backwards in time to before the events of the story took place. Therefore, in the case of Kanako, there was only one of them to begin with. I hope that makes sense as I think they mentioned that in the book.
@@Immortallium I guess that would make sense but it was never explain or shown in the manga, I read it like twice but.. still didn't found the part mention about they were sent backwards in time before the event. Could've been a great plot twist but..
With The Light is a very underrated manga.
It truly is. I can only hope that more people get to read it someday. Not only is it a fantastic read but there's so much information provided as well.
6:35 I know how poor Hikaru feels, I get tired of being left out all the time because I'm Autistic like him too.
I am not familiar with With The Light manga, but I did read some chapters. To be honest, I can definitely relate to the Autism theme.

Horror channel? Oh I didn't know you had one. I'll check out the blog too thanks👍
@@Zenpaii01 Thank you!
Have you read Astro boy?
I have. If you're wondering why it's not in my top ten, it's simply because it's inconsistent in quality. There are a lot of fantastic stories in them but there's also quite a few that I didn't care for. While I do still like Astro Boy, the inconsistent quality prevents it from being in my top ten.
Hey immortallium, your one of my favorite anime UA-camrs and wanna know what your thoughts on the whole localization debacle are? I for one am mixed I’m not a fan of gag dubs, at all, I hate ghost stories and the shin Chan dub, odd choice since shin Chan is popular, I just believe they should localize idioms and such, but adding in beliefs because you inherently don’t like the Japanese I don’t agree with. Despite that I adore the gekiga manga community from what I’ve seen people like Zach Davidson and Ryan holmberg lived in Japan for most of their childhood and their translations for leiji Matsumoto and Yoshiharu tsuge manga are some of the most faifthful translations I’ve read even giving essays about Japanese context to the time their made. This goes for tezuka manga too. I’ve always agreed with the star blazers/speed racer style of dubbing sure they changed names but the themes and ideas were there. Anyways it’s interesting and for subs and dubs I could go either way depending on the anime.
With regards to localisation, I'm in favour of a translation that's loyal to the original media with, as you pointed out, only minor changes where a literal translation would lose the meaning of the original media. I'm also not opposed to simply changing character names although I would prefer that they didn't, two examples being Case Closed and Phoenix Wright. Thanks for the comment!
Im so glad that you loved it that much. Now if you love it as an adult, imagine me who grew up with this, watching all episodes so many times from 5 years old to today! Sadly, it will probably become forgotten by all, all I hope is that the message of Matsumoto will stay in minds for the longest time
I'm sure it'll remain remembered. Over 40 years later, we're still talking about it after all. Thanks for watching!
Sandlandbros... we are BACK
It is surprising how big it's suddenly become. A video game, a movie and a series!
@@Immortallium I just hope they adapt some more Toriyama one-shots.
I just finished this. I really enjoyed it. The art was beautiful, especially the backgrounds and skies
Yeah, it's a beautiful work. The stories were surprisingly dark as well which I liked.
The Twin Knights artwork looks like what Junko Mizuno does now.
I can certainly see some similarities.
Do you know where I can get an English version of the Manga Corpse Princess- Shikabane Hime, Amazon only has a few books and they are Japanese or French
I just took a look, it looks like Yen Press licensed it and released the whole series from 2015-2019. After a little further research, it seems they only released the series digitally. If you're ok with that, here's a link to their website. yenpress.com/titles/9780316354691-corpse-princess-vol-1# If you're looking for them to release the series physically, I'd contact them and let them know that. Manga publishers are always looking to see what will sell and contacting them is a way to let them know that demand is there.
I’m looking for the tittle of one his books where people are being hunted by their clones. Do you know?
It doesn't immediately ring a bell. I tried googling it and I saw that the ninth volume of Phoenix, specifically called "Life", covers something like that. Is that the one you're looking for?
J'adore ce manga cloche Called fat version english 😅😅😅je l'ai 😅
Is it called something else in French? Thanks for watching BTW.
have you read/seen sazan and comet girl? and if so would you recommend? its relatively recent (published in english in 2020, originally between 2015 - 18) but has an 80s/early 90s ish art style but in colour. it looks cool and want to check it out
I haven't. Thanks for the recommendation!

Awesome! Always happy to hear someone learning about Tezuka's work!
It's a shame DMP stopped shipping to the UK, it sucks
Yeah. DMP have made a lot of stupid decisions over the years.
Piracy is a supply issue not a cost issue, I have an issue with companies not making things easy to buy, If they don't sell them we can't buy them.
I am very glad to see you are getting into Toku, I first got into it through Power rangers, Back in 2011 I started to re watch the show though nostalgia, I dicoved the original sentai and through... Means we shant discuss managed to track down a few of the shows from the 80s and 90s, Though that I discovered Kamen Rider and Ultraman and many others such a Inazuman and Kikaida, Then moving onto Garo, Voiclogger the metal heroes seriesand others, A great series that sadly at the time of Writing has not got an official English release is ZUBAT, It's a Revenge show from the 70s set in the countryside of Japan set up like a western, Each episodes sees our hero travel from town to town looking for the one who gunned down his best friend, meeting a bandit or hired gun who has a pparticular skill, He then challenges them at this skill to prove he is better than them, He will then dawn the power suit his friend left for him and use the flying car his friend built to help fight the villains, Very dark for it's time but also very camp as old TOku is.
Yeah, I've been having a great time watching Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman and a few others. Problem is that it's very hard to get my hands on them over here. I have to import all of the Ultramans for one. Still, it's definitely something that I'd fully encourage people to support and try out.!
@@Immortallium 100% I have some sources that I won't share on this for obviously reason but it's a grey area because we aren't given a choice to pay for them. I am from Scotland so same boat as yourself man, I would love to chat more about Tokusatsu I am very passionate about it and you seem super keen.
I really like the way masamune draws the major, but non of the anime kept his character design. I would have liked the uncensored version, it was the best scene in the whole book, I have it on untranslated Japanese version and you also get one page of in his intron depot 1 art book. For fans of his art I recommend the intron depot art books. Especially the first 2
I noticed quite a few differences stylistically between the manga and its adaptations from the tone, the art and even character personalities. Even though I ended up preferring many of its anime adaptations, I'm still glad to have read the manga and it would be cool to one day see an adaptation that closely followed the manga. Only thing is I think a lot of people would be quite confused by the shift!
Miyazaki's TV show Future Boy Conan got a English's dub release by Gkids. This give me slight hope that some of these may get released. Anne of Green Gables I think has the potential to sell pretty well with a good dub. A-lot of women in the west love that story and would probably give it a watch in English.
Future Boy Conan has a bit more going for it than World Masterpiece Theater when it comes to appeal to the English-speaking world but I can't say that it wouldn't have helped.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! No one else has reviewed this revolutionary creation on UA-cam. Too lazy to read I guess? Or too dumb to read? Equally bad.
Thank you very much! Yeah, I remember being surprised myself about that.
I feel a ravenous compulsion to do a deep dive as a Neuroscientist and Manga/Comic creator into this work. Try to break down some of the genius things all too often missed. It may be my background? But this work is/was Prophetic with unique insights. I'm ex-US military too. So I very much appreciate the satire on government interventions, corporate rule and US IMPERIALISM, Military Industrial Complex etc. Shiro demonstrates the problems in "US Empire" and "NATO spies" and "Western Imperialism" very often. Does it with incredible accuracy with what happens today. Also have many "hacker" friends at Raytheon. Accurate there too.
Childhood nostalgia. Loved watching this every Friday after coming back from school. I do agree, I was bored too the death during the island arc.
I think everyone else was pretty bored by those episodes as well. Rest of the show was amazing though!
I cannot echo the above comment enough. I've been a subscriber of yours since the earlier days and it's criminal your subscriber count is still so low, much like Archangel Manga. I've just caught up with a lot of the videos you've posted in the last couple of years and some of the topics covered are highly intriguing. Thank you!
Thank you very much for the support!
I loved your video. I liked volume 1 and 1.5 a lot, but the second one left me truly dissapointed. Very hard to follow the story, too many concepts that sometimes felt like thrown at the reader randomly... And too much fanservice.
Yeah, it's a mess. There are definitely some interesting ideas here but it's such a mess. Yeah, that fanservice certainly doesn't help. That one panel near the end revolted me.
How rare is Black Jack volume 1?
I just looked it up and it seems like it's available on amazon still.
@@Immortallium Did you read it entirely? I´m afraid I will only be able to buy about the first three volumes and fear I might be losing way too much
@@andreviana1902 I only have the first three volumes myself. The stories are mostly episodic so I'd encourage you to pick them up in both a sign that maybe they should reprint the other ones and so that you can experience Black Jack for yourself and decide whether you like it or not.
It’s an okay film, and the ending really let me down. It’s starts out quite good but by the end, I was really frustrated with the story. The animation was excellent, the voice acting was fine (I usually go the subtitle route) and the music was good (reminded me a bit of Gabor Szabo) but the meandering, plodding story made less sense than Cleopatra (and I thought that was an okay film). At least Cleopatra has something of a logical story but even that’s stretching the bounds of credibility. I give this film 6/10.
That's fair enough. We all have our opinions. I was fine with the ending but yeah, the meandering is the real problem with this film.
@@Immortallium I also gave it a low score because I don’t think tyrants should be able to walk away scot-free from the crimes they committed. That may be a nit-pick on my part though.
Just finished reading it myself, same comments as yours, could have fleshed out the love interest more to make the ending more impactful. Love your review 😊
Awesome to hear!
Interesting video, as both an anime nerd and an economics nerd 😁
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
